Personal Learning Networks - How Ideas Connect People

A personal learning network (PLN) can come in many different forms. Generally, they are groups of like minded individuals that share ideas and resources. This network is essential to any professional to stay up to date on best practices and reflect on their own work through constructive criticism (Rajagopal et al., 2012). Throughout my master's program, I've been able to connect with new people through old colleagues as well as online communities. Online forums such as Reddit, tutorials on youtube, Articulate e-learning heroes, and my classmates are some of the ways I engage with people within the instructional design industry. Some of the other ways to increase visibility are by way of LinkedIn posts or in person networking. A strong personal learning network doesn't just lead to new connections or potential job opportunities, they lead to new perspectives and ideally long-lasting relationships built upon mutual trust.
